Summer has always meant trips to the ocean. I love the smell of the salt, the heat of the sand in between my toes and the peacefulness that stems from watching the waves ebb and flow.
During summer 2020, all the beaches were closed as a way of keeping everyone safe. I began using the Cyanotype process to conjure my ocean memories.
These are photographs unmoored and disconnected from the physical world. I am drawing with light, chemistry and time, so the ocean referent resides not in the world as we know it, but in a collective imagination.
Each unique Cyanotype is a different mental, emotional reenactment and offers a joyful liberation from quarantine.
